Dr. J.R. Pickett

The NTOA is pleased to welcome Dr. Jason R. Pickett as chairman of our Tactical Emergency Medical Support (TEMS) section. Dr. Pickett is Deputy Medical Director for Austin/Travis County EMS, Austin Fire Department, and Austin Police Department SWAT and directly supports tactical operations with that team. He is also the Deputy Medical Director for the Texas Department of Public Safety and directly supports the Texas Ranger Division Special Operations Group SWAT Team.

Dr. Pickett has been active in law enforcement medical support operations since 2006 after joining the Kettering Regional SWAT Team in Kettering, Ohio. He has been an instructor for the Ohio Tactical Officers Association since 2010, teaching basic casualty care to police officers and advanced tactical medicine for TEMS medics. He developed the Critical Injury First Aid curriculum, along with his colleague Dr. Brian Springer, which is now required for all police officer candidates in the state of Ohio and teaches this curriculum at the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy. Since 2012, he has been the TEMS Co-Chair for the Special Operations Medical Association conference (now Scientific Assembly). As a Guidelines Committee member for the Committee on Tactical Emergency Casualty Care (TECC), he has helped develop guidelines for high threat care that are used nationwide.

Dr. Pickett states, “It is my honor to work with the NTOA in the capacity of TEMS Section Chair. In this position I will continue to build teams of providers and subject matter experts to advance the field of tactical prehospital medicine across a full spectrum of operations and organizations.”
